‘DRN’ is an acronymous reference to the first-century BCE epic poem De Rerum Natura (“On The Nature of Things”) by the Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius. Among the most ambitious poems ever written, it brilliantly exposits the atomistic work of Leucippus, Democritus, and, most critically, Epicurus. One of the poem’s themes is the cultivation of a fiercely optimistic view of the world once we shed superstition and make way for what we have come to call the scientific method: observation, testing, explanation, knowledge, and the possibility of prediction and minimizing risk.

This is a potent theme for us here at DRN, because it resonates with our desire to understand the physical world that we find ourselves in. As Virgil writes, in admiration of Lucretius’ accomplishment:

"Felix, qui potuit rerum cognoscere causas."

“Happy is he who knows the causes of things.”

Georgics 2.490–502
